Tales of St. Austin's is a collection of short stories and essays, all with a school theme, by P. G. Wodehouse. The stories are set in the fictional public school of St. Austin's, which was also the setting for The Pothunters (1902); they revolve around cricket, rugby, petty gambling and other boyish escapades.

Tales of St Austin P G Wodehouse Books

This reflects Wodehouse's life in the English public schools, and his love for cricket. Wodehouse wit and humor are legendary. He is a master of the analogy, and thoroughly delightful story lines. This was one of his earliest efforts written in 1903. I also like this edition of his books. Most of the ones I have are from this edition by Overlook Press.

Tales of St Austin P G Wodehouse Books Reviews

The first time I heard of P.G. Wodehouse was watching the wonderful Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (better known from "Black Adder" and "House") TV series "Jeeves and Wooster". That series put me on to reading as much as I could from this great writer.

"I thought of my sixpence, my only sixpence, and felt a distinct pang of remorse. After all, only the other day the chaplain had said how wrong it was to bet. By Jove, so he had. Decent man the chaplain. Pity to do anything he would disapprove of. I was on the point of recalling my wager, when before my mind's eye rose a vision of Bradshaw rampant and sneering, and myself writhing in my chair a crushed and scored-off wreck."

Simply put, if you like one Wodehouse story you're going to like them all. Much of this can be explained by Wodehouse's mastery of the language and constant deft turns of phrase, period slang, and comic timing.

During these times the pleasant but hilarious works of Wodehouse are just what we need!
Swine flu or the recession got you down? Are you pinned against the ropes? Have you got the blues? Melancholia got you in its grip? Worried that Obama may not be able to get your brother-in-law the job running US Steel and thus off your couch? .... Fear not! The cry goes out P.G. Wodehouse to the rescue! There is nothing like a good Wodehouse read to cheer one up, not a pill, not a drink, not a men or women - just Wodehouse! Wodehouse is what the doctor ordered to tickle you in the funny bone and get a smile going on the old face.

Another school novel from the British master of comedic complications - the master of words - P. G. Wodehouse. The usual amusing assortment of misbehaving schoolboys escaping their well-deserved punishment through implausible twists of fate. Fun to read on the plane, in bed, on your yacht, (well, if you have one), no matter - each story is very funny, and the word play is fantastic - all in the typically wonderful Wodehouse way! This book is totally hilarious! One loud laugh after another! A Wodehouse masterpiece!
Oh Mr. Wodehouse! Where would we be without you! One of the finest witty wordsmiths who ever picked up a pen. When I need a smile, or a lift, or even a roll on the floor laugh I turn to one of the many wonderful works of Wodehouse.

So many wonderful and delightful stories to choose from, and each one is from a different period in PG 'Plum' to his friends - life. While my favorite character is Psmith, how can I not enjoy the mutterings of Ukridge, or long to have my life saved from disasters by the likes of Jeeves.

Stephen Fry wrote 'Without Wodehouse I am not sure I would be a tenth of what I am today...his writings awoke me to the possibilities of language. His rhythms, tropes, tricks and mannerisms are deep within me. But more than that, he taught me something about good nature. It IS enough to be benign, to be gentle, to be funny, to be kind.

As laughter is the best medicine, perhaps we need a good dose of Wodehouse from time to time, and during these bleak winter months, in the dark time of the economy, Wodehouse is just what the Doctor ordered!

One of Wodehouse's best - the school boy at boarding school farce - you'll laugh at each and every story!
Not knowing a damn thing about Cricket, it might as well have been written in Ancient Greek.
No one captures British schoolyard hijinks better than PG Wodehouse. He sets the scene, builds characters, and has realistic plots, correct for ther time and place, that are engaging to read and reflect upon. Worth the read!
What can I say about Wodehouse that hasn't already been said? Light fiction at its finest? Too late, been said. This is a nice collection of short stories, and a pleasant read.
These stories are short and fun to read. They all deal with boarding school days where students find themselves or their chums in sticky situations, but they always seem to find a way around the rules to get away with things they shouldn't be doing.
